In June, 1889, the body of a small child, three or four years old ,a sad reminder of the great Johnstown Flood of that year, washed ashore near Beaver. Local church people arranged to pay Will Atkins, a local undertaker, to give the child a Christian burial. She was buried in Beaver cemetery. To this day, hundreds of local residents, each year, come to her gravesite, leave presents such as dolls and cards, and even light candles on her earth. Here is a video that I filmed a number of years ago to commemorate this piece of tragedy that not only affected Johnstown, but the entire commonwealth of Pennsylvania.ย
Another Johnstown Flood victim, an unknown woman approximately 24 years old, was also found and interred in June, 1889, but her burial location for some reason was not recorded.
